Air Source Heat Pumps: An Air Source Heat Pump is an air conditioner with a reversing valve that allows it to operate 12 months out of the year. In summer months the unit extracts heat from inside the house and discharges it out doors. In the heating season the unit extracts heat from the air outside and sends it inside the house. The compressor runs the same way summer and winter. The analogy is the motor in your car. It always runs in the same direction and the transmission moves the car forward or in reverse.

Dual Fuel: The most efficient system design with an air source heat pump is “Dual Fuel”. A gas furnace is used as the air handler and back up for the heat pump. The electric utility will discount the electric rate for operating the heat pump for the rite to “manage” the electric load on their grid system in peak demand. Most utilities discount their rate by 50%. When coupled with the high efficiency of the heat pumps fuel savings a return on investment can be achieved in the first year of operation.
